FAQ: How long have you been in business and how many weddings have you shot?

When I sit down with couples to talk about their wedding, often times they’ll have a few questions about the photography for their wedding day. There are general questions about pricing, coverage, and what’s included in the collections, but sometimes couples will ask different kinds of questions. Like how I got into photography, favorite places to photograph, where I got the candle I’m burning, and questions about me and my business.

In an effort to streamline questions to couples who I may not get the chance to meet in person, I’ve decided to start a FAQ portion on my blog. Today’s question from a real client prior to booking –

“How long have you been in business and how many weddings have you shot?”

I started my own business in May of 2011 after finishing college. Prior to that I worked with another photographer for about 3 and a half years shooting around 100 weddings – we were busy! So busy she took me on a trip to Mexico which was amazing. Drinking age was 18 and I was a few months shy of my 21st birthday.

Working with her really gave me an insight to the wedding industry and how weddings typically run. It was an invaluable experience that gave be the building blocks to where I am today. Since starting my business in 2011, I’ve shot around 40 weddings with 2014 being my busiest year yet with 31 weddings total.

On a side note, I don’t feel the total number of weddings a photographer has photographed identifies with the quality of their work. Sure, the more weddings you photograph the more experience/practice/better you will get…but just like age, it ain’t nothin but a number. Awesome portfolio, good customer service, and a good mesh of personalities should make for a perfect fit!
