Shortly after Madeline and Jason were married in December of 2011, Madeline had to deploy to Afghanistan for a year. During their time apart, the newlyweds talked everyday. Mainly through text message which they told me got a little pricy because of those pesky international rates. I asked if they could ever Skype but she said there was only 2 computers at their camp with wifi capability. So, you can imagine the line to use them.
On our way to our location, we all rode together and I couldn’t help but ask Madeline what it was like over there. We had about an hour drive up to the snow so we had some time to catch up and converse. The topic of eating came up and there were 2 types of food that stood out to me. Foot bread is made…wait for it…with your feet! Not to change topics or anything, but picturing someone stomping dough down with their feet reminded me of that I Love Lucy episode where she stomps grapes…Another food was Afghan Rats. Yes…Rats. They’d cook rats and the legs were actually considered a delicacy.
When she contacted me to do photos of the two of them I was so happy. It was like her welcoming home and they were reuniting! I always love photographing in the snow because of the amazing natural reflector snow can be (photog nerd talk for those of you reading for fun). That’s exactly where we started and I was so happy to see these two together again!
There may or may not have been a snowball fight…
Oh Madeline, you have such an infectious smile…
On our way home, we stopped in Placerville to warm up, change clothes, and shoot a few more photos š
I had so much fun with you guys! Good luck with the move to Kansas and as always Madeline, thank you for your service.
Much love and appreciation,
Ryan
